Introduction
The Wat-er we drinking project's instructions were to design and build a device new methods and ways to safely drink water. My group and I decided to construct a device that would filter water from a non drinkable state to that which can be consumed. Along with the basic idea of construction, we were put to the task of explaining how our device functions in term sof chemistry.
Content
- Electrolyte: a liquid or gel that contains ions and can be decomposed by electrolysis, e.g., that present in a battery.
- Solute: the minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.
- Solvent: able to dissolve other substances.
- Solution: a liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent).
- Polarity: The separation of electric charge which leads to an electric dipole moment within a molecule.
- pH: scale of acidity from 0 to 14. It tells how acidic or alkaline a substance is.
Reflection:
This project was a great experience for me. Having experts and professionals from the water district come into class and speak to us was really eye opening in terms of the real problems that face our world. With that said, there were specific things I felt that I did well, and other things I could have improved on. One thing I did well is collaborate. This project happen to have been assigned at a personally difficult time, and I spent a lot of the project work time at home. Due to this, I had to work from home and carefully plan out different steps of the project from there. In addition, the distances tested my communication skills. Working from home forced me to exercise my communication skills, constantly talking to my group mates from home
One thing I could improve on with my projects is my creativity skill. During this project, I somewhat struggled to come up with new and original ideas. The problem of dirty water around the world is quite complicated, and I struggled to come up with new ideas. For the next project, I will try even harder to think outside the box. My critical-thinking skills could have also been better. When faced with a problem or issue regarding our project, I need to learn how to relentlessly persue various possible solutions until I find one that works.
